A new play by Nick Dear based on the novel by Mary Shelley

Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting) returned to the theatre to direct this visionary production with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller. It will return to cinemas worldwide from June for a limited season of encore screenings.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature in two electrifying broadcasts. Benedict Cumberbatch will play the Creature on Monday (6/4) and Friday (6/8). He will play Victor Frankenstein on Thursday (6/7) and Saturday (6/9). Jonny Lee Miller will play Victor Frankenstein Monday (6/4) and Friday (6/8). He will play the Creature on Thursday (6/7) and Saturday (6/9).

Both actors were nominated together for an Olivier Award (British Version of the Tony Awards) for Best Actor in a Play. Frankenstein also received Olivier Award nominations for Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.

★★★★★ The Times
“This taut, thrilling play runs with hardly a moment for breath.”
