It’s 1974 and the corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain’s political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes. In this hung parliament, the ruling party holds on by a thread. Votes are won and lost by one, fist fights erupt in the bars, and ill MPs are hauled in to cast their votes.

It’s a time when a staggering number of politicians die, and age-old traditions and allegiances are thrown aside in the struggle for power.

James Graham’s biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed new play strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments.
More Information>>>

On March 18, 1913 Salem and Winston, residents were going to the polls to vote on a proposal to consolidate their towns under one city government. Just 34 years earlier, in 1879, they had soundly rejected the idea. That failed effort reflected a lingering political acrimony between the towns that dated back to the founding of Winston in 1849. A second consolidation proposal in the 1890s never got far enough to be put to a vote. But this time, boosters were confident that the citizens of the twin city would embrace this merger of identities.

If you weren’t lucky enough to get a ticket to see this film during the WS Centennial Celebration (May 9 & 10) then don’t miss another chance to see what all the buzz is about. Merger: making the Twin City is the brand new City of Winston-Salem’s WSTV – 13 film that traces the history of the merger of Winston & Salem. The film was produced by the award winning documentary film team of Frank Elliot, Deputy Director of the City of WS Marketing & Communications Department and WSTV – 13 Sr. Video Specialist Larry Bell.

After surviving a tragedy, estranged husband and wife Don and Janna go on a series of “blind dates” to try to save their marriage. Based on the critically acclaimed films by Stanley Tucci and Theo Van Gogh, “The Personal(s)” is the third incarnation of a story that is often compared to the classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Both heartbreaking and hilarious, “The Personal(s)” is a moving inquiry into humor, compassion and our ability to endure.

Helen Mirren reprises her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, broadcast live from London’s Gielgud Theatre as part of National Theatre Live.

For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.

From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while she remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.

The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation The Queen.

The Audience is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and presented in the West End by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries.

Piedmont Opera presents Summer Encore Screenings of Live in HD from the Metropolitan Opera.

Richard Eyre’s hit production stars Elīna Garanča as the seductive gypsy of the title, opposite Roberto Alagna as the obsessed Don José. Carmen “is about sex, violence, and racism—and its corollary: freedom,” the director says about Bizet’s drama. “It is one of the inalienably great works of art. It’s sexy, in every sense. And I think it should be shocking.”

New York’s NewSong Music is proud to partner with the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem to curate a new emerging artist music series at the Hanesbrands Theatre.

Sarah Siskind has been called “the best female singer/songwriter in America today” (Steve Binder, legendary TV director/producer) and “an artist you must hear now” by Spin Magazine. She has toured with Bon Iver (he has also famously covered her “Lovin’s For Fools”) and The Swell Season, had songs recorded by Alison Krauss (the GRAMMY nominated “Simple Love”), Madi Diaz and many more. Armed with a striking vocal style and solid guitar-work, mostly on her beloved vintage electric Gibson, Sarah is a regular NPR performer with features on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, World Cafe with David Dye, All Songs Considered, Song Of The Day and most recently NPR’s Mountain Stage.

Sarah’s new album Novel, released in September 2011 on Red Request Records was conceptualized in the summer of 2010 when she found herself thousands of miles from her southern home in a small ranch house just outside of Boulder, CO. Escaping the oppressive summer heat for six weeks, she took temporary roots in Colorado while teaching songwriting at a nearby festival and touring the southwest. Her intent was to finish writing the songs for her new album during her downtime, but what evolved was a fully realized album, recorded, engineered and produced by Siskind.

After an extensive “Art&Music” album release tour (Sarah also makes jewelry from pieces she collects on tour) in the fall of 2011, Sarah relocated to Nelson County, Virginia.

2012 has brought big announcements, including support dates for Bonnie Raitt and the planned re-release of an album by Justin Vernon’s (Bon Iver) record label Chigliak, an imprint of Jagjaguwar Records, which Vernon sites as a pivotal record for him. At SXSW 2012, Sarah was invited to share the stage with Glen Hansard (Swell Season, “Once”) and was named “one of our favorite 5 voices” by Time Magazine.

Critical Praise

“Sarah Siskind is one of very few songwriters that is a true student of American music. Her lexicon is incredible and her voice…well, she’s a teacher.” – Bon Iver

“With Novel, Sarah has created another extraordinary collection of some of the most beautiful and unique songs you’re likely to hear. She continues to be one of my favorite singers and songwriters. She absolutely knocks me out.” – Bonnie Raitt

“An artist you must hear now.” – SPIN Magazine

“One of our favorite singers storming SXSW this year.” (2012) – TIME Magazine

“Sarah is a real artist with her own voice. [Novel] is a something to be proud of.” – Tim O’Brien

“I love her songwriting and artistry.” – Amy Grant

Buy Tickets➚

The National Gallery, London, presents a major exhibition on one of greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age: Johannes Vermeer, painter of Girl with a Pearl Earring. The National Gallery has chosen to focus on his art in relation to music. Music was one of the most popular themes of Dutch painting and revealed an enormous amount about the sitter and the society.

Our event film goes beyond the exhibition to tell the entire story of Vermeer’s life and, in doing so, we show in detail many of the artist’s great works. The program will suit the wide audience who adore Vermeer’s work and who want both to see it in detail and to learn more about this mysterious, fascinating man.
